Cultural Retreat for Ko`olaupoko Native Hawaiian Practitioners
Native Hawaiians from the moku of Ko`olaupoko who are practitioners of various Hawaiian arts and skills are invited to participate in a cultural retreat on Moku o Lo`e island August 5-7th.  This is an opportunity for na kumu hula, kahuna la`au lapa`au, and practitioners of na mea Hawai`i to come together and kuka kuka - discuss issues and concerns of our practitioners, and strategies to protect and perpetuate Hawaiian culture for generations to come. Scholarship and Financial Aid Grants

The Ko`olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club raises funds annually to provide scholarship and financial aid grants to deserving students, primarily on Windward O`ahu.

The scholarships are open to anyone, with preference given to students of Native Hawaiian ancestry residing in the areas from Kane`ohe to Kualoa.

Tours of Historic Sites and Cultural Areas

Tours are provided in conjunction with the Ko`olau Foundation, and are offered for a nominal donation to help defray the cost of materials.  Some of the tours include:

Na Wahi Pana o Kane`ohe (4 hours)
Likeke Trail (2 hours)
Nu`uanu Pali/Kane`ohe overview (one hour)
Waihe`e Ahupua`a (two hours)
Moku o Lo`e (Coconut Island) (3 hours)
Lulumahu Valley (two hours)
Makaha Valley (8 hours)

The civic club does not provide transportation, and all participants will be required to sign waiver of liability forms before participating in any tours.

Cultural Consultations

The civic club offers consultations to any in need of advice or assistance with questions regarding cultural or historic preservation matters in the communities from Kane`ohe to Kualoa.  There is no charge for this assistance, but donations are always welcomed to sustain our cultural education program.

Lectures / Presentations

The club can provide lecturers or presentations on the history of Ko`olaupoko, historic sites, or cultural practices of Native Hawaiians, upon request and availability of speakers.

Choral Singing

NEW!  Former Royal Hawaiian Bandmaster Aaron Mahi, a member of our club, is directing our choral singing every Monday evening from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the civic club office, suite 209, 46-005 Kawa St. (across from Koa House Restaurant on Kahuhipa).  You do not have to join the club to participate, and the singing is open to everyone. E komo mai...come join us!
Current Major Projects of the Ko`olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club

Ahupua`a Boundary Marker project - Purpose: to place appropriate markers at the boundaries of each of the Ko`olaupoko ahupua`a, as part of a longrange program to educate residents of those ahupua`a on the cultural and natural resources of their areas and Hawaiian sustainability practices to malama the `aina, the ocean and the people of their ahupua`a. Help needed: representatives of each of these ahupua`a to serve on a steering committee to plan and coordinate the project. Phone 226-4195 to volunteer.

Mahuahua Ai o Hoi - Purpose: to return to productivity the lands of Hoi, ahupua`a of He`eia (mauka of the long bridge off Kamehameha Highway), by clearing alien vegetation, repairing environmental damage to the land and water, restoring the kalo (taro) fields and planting other crops, and construction of a poi factory and community center. Help needed: volunteers to help clear the alien vegetation, most weekends and other days. Ph. 235-8111 to volunteer or e-mail: wong.bkaaleleo@gmail.com 

Distinguished Kama`aina Book - Purpose: to publish in printed version a booklet detailing the achievements of distinguished kama`aina of the Kane`ohe bay region, as identified by the Ko`olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club from 2007 to present, for distribution to libraries, government agencies and community organizations.  Help needed:  donations to defray the cost of publication.  Ph. 226-4195 if you can help.

Na`oneala`a Project - Purpose: to design and install a story board at Na`oneala`a (Kane`ohe Beach Park), recognizing the historic value and significance of this site, and to publish brochures explaining the history of Na`oneala`a.  Help needed:  graphic artist to design the historic imagery of the area's story.  Ph. 226-4195 if you can help.

Ha`iku Valley Cultural Access - Purpose: to malama Ha`iku Valley as a place of historic and cultural value by removing alien vegetation and litter, and by educating ourselves and others about the significance of this wahi kapu.  Call 235-8111 if you would like to help.

Volunteer Service Opportunities

Trail Maintenance and Tour Support
Assist with caring for trails used by the club for cultural tours; assist, as needed, with escorting tours to various cultural sites and on hiking trails.  Contact Mahealani at 226-4195 or via email: malamapono@aol.com
 
Mahuahua Ai o Hoi - He`eia Lo`i Restoration Project

Fundraising Activities

Membership Support
